The BYU MS Asia Management Society would like to encourage our chapters to consider having My Leadership Story as part of their area programs.

The BYU MS My Story Program is a webinar explicitly designed to allow worthy individuals to tell their stories to the BYU Management Society. The individuals who give their stories can be everyday people doing extraordinary things by living their lives with moral and ethical leadership in mind.

All About The BYU MS Asia – My Story

The BYU Management Society Asia loves our new program called My Story Program. The My Story is based on the BYU Management Society at BYU Hawaii, and a program on the BYU Hawaii campus called My Leadership Story.

The purpose of My Story is to find people in your area who have shown leadership in the community, church, or business and allow them to share their stories. The My Story is about helping others to get inspired by listening to things that other people have gone through or choices they have made in their lives to arrive where they are today.

Here are some things you can ask your presenter to talk about for My Story

  • Background about their life and their choices for their career and other paths. What were the driving factors that helped them make the decision they did?
  • Any trials or hardships they had along the way and what they have learned from them.
  • How were they able to succeed in their career and yet find a way to put God, family, and church as an essential focus of their lives.
  • What advice would they give people who are just starting out in life and a career?
  • What have they learned from their successes and failures?

The focus of My Story is for the presenters to talk about their life stories and then to help inspire others through the choices they have made in their life. It does not just need to be about their successes, but sometimes we learn more from another person’s failure than their successes.

My Story is also a chance to honor and acknowledge everyday men and women doing extraordinary things in their lives. The My Story Program gives them an opportunity to tell their stories.

How To Start A BYU MS My Story Program

Starting a My Story program is not very difficult, and the BYU MS Asia Area Board feels like it is an excellent program for chapters in the area to implement.

Here are a few things you can do to help to start your My Story program for your BYU MS Chapter.

Identify People In Your Area

It would help if you first had you and your team identify people in your area who would speak at a webinar about their life stories. These individuals do not need to be BYU Management Society members or even members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but should be people who have shown they strive to live a moral and ethical life.

We also recommend looking within your own BYU Management Society membership and identifying members in the BYU Management Society. They can tell you their story and how they have properly focused and lived their lives.

Approach Who May Want To Give a My Story Webinar

Once you have identified those who may be willing to give a My Story webinar, you can then approach them and ask them if they are eager to give the webinar.

Set Webinar Date and Inform Your Members and Area

Once you have set the webinar date, let your members know to sign up for the webinar. We recommend using a sign-up form to know who will attend the webinar.

If it is a Zoom or online-based webinar and will be in English, you can contact Anita in the area by clicking here to get the webinar information on our BYU MS Asia Area calendar.

We encourage all our chapters to advertise the webinar on social media and other channels. Also, share the information with other chapters to know what you are doing for your programs.

Format for My Story Webinars

There are many formats that can be used for the My Story Webinars; we suggest the structure we are giving can be adjusted in any way you see fit for your chapter and your presenter. It would be best to talk to the presenter to find out any ideas or how they want to handle the meeting.

Here is our format suggestion for the My Story Webinars:

  • Start With An Opening Prayer – We encourage our chapters to start their meetings with an opening prayer.
  • Introduce Presenter – Have someone introduce the webinar presenter.
  • Presenter Talk – The presenter can then give their prepared talk. Some presenters may want it to be more of a Question and Answer period. That is also a great way to do My Story, but if you are going to do that, you may want to have an annoucer to help ask the questions and have some questions ready to go. Also, some Zoom accounts have a Q&A function that allows the audience to answer questions separated by the chat function.
  • Q&A Session – Depending on the presenter, you can decide if you want to have a Q& A session. Many times the Q&A sessions can be one of the more exciting parts of a talk as it allows the presenter to answer some interesting questions.
  • Closing Prayer

We also encourage that our chapter does the following once a My Story is completed.

Here are a few things that we feel can help each chapter:

  • Send A Thank You Note – Anytime you have a speaker who has volunteered their time, it is important the chapter leadership send them a note or give them a call to thank them. This can be an email to thank them for their time and speech, a personal call or thank you note.
  • Give a review on social media or other channels – It is always good to have a review or thank you on social media or other channels. This also helps communicate to others what you are doing in your chapter.

Thoughts On Using Technology For My Story

Today, with modern technology, we love using Zoom and other digital platforms to have these webinars. Because you are doing a Zoom or webinar meeting online, you can then reach out to find people who can not do the webinar in person but can do it online.

In some areas, you can do a combination type of webinar where you will have the webinar in person and have a zoom, youtube, or other links where people can watch the webinar also online. Doing this may also allow people to attend who maybe would not otherwise be able to participate in.

One of the goals for any chapter of the BYU Management Society should be to look at all the members in their area and find ways to ensure that as many people as possible can attend the meeting as possible. We encourage all our member leaders to hold at least one event each month.

At the BYU Management Society Asia, we love the idea of My Story as we see it as a way to help inspire the BYU MS membership in the area.

What Is Moral Leadership?

Moral leadership is a leader who leads others with moral and ethical choices in mind. A leader can gently persuade others to do the right thing. A moral leader is a very different kind of leader as a moral leader is not afraid to make the problem right choices because that choice is the right thing to do.
