Challenges In Mongolia With COVID Lockdowns

We live in a challenging time where COVID-19 has killed nearly five percent of the Mongolian population. The impact in Mongolia, especially on youth from rural areas, has been devastating. Since the pandemic, Mongolian kids have been struck, having been in strict lockdown for 2 years and only recently entering a hybrid form of education.

Both students and teachers in the countryside were unprepared to have online lessons. The Ministry of Education in Mongolia identified that 65 percent of first-graders have not even learned the alphabet.

EM Academy Recognizes The Online Education And Seeks To Help

In recognizing this, we decided to set up an online English language academy called EM Academy (Educated Mongolia Academy) and have educated over 1000 kids online since September 2020.

Most of our teachers have TESOL degrees, and some are native speakers. Moreover, because of the lockdown, family income in the countryside decreased.

Therefore we also created a scholarship program with the Dutch-Mongolian Association for kids who cannot pay the fee, and in total, 150 students were awarded this scholarship. The kids are mostly from families who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Yet, we were facing technical difficulties as students’ numbers increase. The cost of building a website was expensive for a small business.

BYU MS Asia Business Plan Helped Fund Growth

We decided to participate in the BYU MS Asia 2021 business competition organized by the BYU Management Society. We were blessed to win first place in the BYU Hawaii part of the competition and second place in the BYU MS Asia area competition for small businesses.

The fund helps us develop our website and to double our capacity and increase HR personnel. This competition enabled us to be able to help more students in the countryside to ensure they also receive an education.

We hope that more businesses will enhance their power by participating in the BYU MS Asia Competition.
