BYU Management Society Beginnings

The BYU Management Society was established in 1977 by then-dean of the Marriott School, Merrill J. Bateman. Since then, the society has grown into a global organization with over ninety chapters in thirty countries. Membership is not only open to all BYU alumni but also to interested business professionals. Through the society members form lasting friendships and meaningful business relationships.

As the sponsor of the Management Society, the BYU Marriott School of Management provides leadership and program support through the executive director. The steering committee, composed of seasoned Management Society members and business professionals, assists in the training and development of chapter officers; the preparation and presentation of special programs and conferences; and the establishment and development of new chapters.

Individual chapters are led by an elected president and an executive committee. Chapters are connected to the BYU Management society but each individual area and chapter can set their own strategic course and direct their own programs. This ensures that each chapter fulfills the vision of the society while remaining autonomous.

Values of the BYU Management Society

As with any organization, it is important to understand its core values. The BYU Management Society has outlined six core values:

To Meet Purposefully

Every program, event, and activity is meaningful because it is motivated by the vision: growing moral and ethical leadership throughout the world. More than just providing information, entertainment, or social outlets, the Management Society emphasizes ethics and develops leadership. Chapter leaders carefully plan activities and ensure they are in-line with the vision.

To Grow People

No matter what career stage members are in, the society is committed to professional development. This includes member-to-member mentoring, career workshops, and networking opportunities. All chapter leaders ensure that chapter activities provide learning and growing experiences for professionals at all stages of their careers.

To Act Professionally

The society is a professional organization where members treat each other with respect. It is inclusive–regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, career path, alma mater, or religious affiliation. All members should conduct themselves in a professional manner (not casual or ecclesiastical) through their dress, speech, meetings, etc.

To Think Globally

Across the world, chapters and members work together to develop strong leaders for businesses, churches, communities, and families, thus building the society worldwide. Chapter leaders use their love for and knowledge of other cultures and languages to help connect society members.

To Align With BYU and Marriott School

To Live The Vision

From the recent graduate to the seasoned leader, society members exhibit a lifelong commitment to the mission and ideals of the BYU Management Society. Members commit themselves to the program and the vision rather than to personalities. Leaders strive to implement a full program patterned after the ideal set by the mission.

BYU Management Society Purpose

The Purposes of the Management Society

The BYU Management Society has outlined its four main purposes for society. Chapters should try to follow and direct their activities as close to these purposes as possible.

Updating and Enhancing Skills

Professional advancement of its members is a key priority of the BYU Management Society. Through events such as seminars, educational lectures, luncheons, and special conferences, members are exposed to faculty research and current business trends. Local professionals and special guests also add knowledge and share success.

In addition, the society provides opportunities for professionals such as certified public accountants, financial planners, and others to earn Continuing Professional Education credit through BYU-sponsored courses, seminars, and conferences.

Making Connections

Through chapter contacts, discussions, meetings, and online services, the society helps members develop a broad network. This network not only assists members seeking to enhance their careers but also those who may need assistance getting established in new areas.

Building the Future

The Marriott School’s mission is to attract, develop, and place men and women of faith, character, and professional ability who will become outstanding leaders capable of dealing with change in a global environment. To fulfill this mission, the school relies heavily on alumni and friends for placement, mentoring, and other support.

Management Society members help the school identify internship and job opportunities for the school’s graduate and undergraduate students. Many volunteer as mentors, guiding students in their choice of careers, classes, and other preparations. Chapter members also contribute by making donations that help fund BYU scholarships

Strengthening Communities

In addition to supporting the Marriott School, chapters are encouraged to match members’ talents and interest with community needs. Each chapter is urged to organize at least one community service initiative each year. Activities vary broadly and may include supporting the Pathway program with mentors and speaking partners, sponsoring a Boy Scout merit badge pow-wow, helping construct a house with Habitat for Humanity, or organizing a community cleanup.

Chapters often establish scholarship funds to sponsor students from their area at BYU and local colleges and universities.

BYU Management Society Political Neutrality

Political Neutrality

The BYU Management society is a politically neutral society. This means that no politic events are to be held or operated under the guise of the BYU Management Society. This political neutrality extends to not just the BYU Management Society in the United States but also throughout the world.

Here is some more information on why we must be politically neutral:

BYU and its affiliated organizations, such as the BYU Management Society, must be politically neutral to maintain tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Section 501(c)(3) requires that these organizations “not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.” The Treasury Regulations specify that a “candidate for public office means an individual who offers himself/herself, or is proposed by others, as a contestant for an elective public office, whether such office is national, state, or local.” Treas. Reg. § 1.501(c)(3)-1(c)(3)(iii). Since a person may be “proposed by others” without his or her consent, or before an official announcement of intent to seek public office, the candidacy line is not always clear. See T.A.M. 9130008 (16 April 1991).
Please note that federal tax laws, not federal or state election laws applicable to candidates themselves, govern the actions of BYU and its affiliated organizations.

BYU Management Society ByLaws

The BYU Management Society By-Laws

Order is important in any organization. So it is important that each chapter follow the BYU Management bylaws and rules of the organization.

The BYU Management Society bylaws have been established so that misunderstandings can be avoided and more orderly governance can be achieved. The bylaws, found in the Appendix, outline the name, vision, and purpose of the society as well as the organization, membership, and activities and processes that are involved. Please consult the bylaws so society can function properly and smoothly.

The BYU Management Society is a wonderful organization to be associated with and to be part of. Those that participate in the BYU Management Society not only gain lasting friendships but can also receive life-changing mentoring, training, and service opportunities.
