BYU MS Business Plan Competition – About Our Judges and Judging

About Our Judges

Our judges come from diverse backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on experience in business, especially within the local Asia region. Some judges also have academic backgrounds, providing valuable insights into the academic aspects of the business plans.

Each judge brings their own personal experiences, whether in business or life, to the table when evaluating the submissions.

We aim to have a diverse panel of judges across different categories to ensure a fair and balanced judging process.

About the Judging Criteria

Like in business and life, the business plan competition is not an exact science. Each judge brings unique experiences that influence their evaluation of the business plans.

For example, a team may deliver a perfect business plan presentation, but their business model may have flaws, such as inconsistent financials or unrealistic projections. Conversely, another team might have a less polished presentation but a stronger business model, demonstrating clear plans for fund utilization and a viable business strategy.

In a situation like this, the judges will likely award the prize to the team with the less polished presentation but a stronger overall business plan. They recognize that, despite imperfections in the presentation, the team presented a better business model. Therefore, the judges’ ability to see and understand the viability of the business can be a crucial factor in the judging process.

We encourage participants to focus not only on their presentations but also on ensuring that their business concept makes sense across all areas and to understand that the judges will use their expertise to decide the competition’s outcome.

BYU MS Asia will respect the judges’ decisions unless there is an obvious and rare error in judgment. We trust our judges and defer to their expertise in determining which teams should receive awards.

Learning From the Judges

Participants should view the competition as an opportunity for growth and learning. Regardless of the outcome, teams should seek to understand the feedback and use it to improve and make adjustments for future endeavors.

People’s Choice Award

The People’s Choice award is determined solely by the number of votes a team receives from the public. A team can win both a category award and the People’s Choice award.

For more details, please refer to our brochure on the Business Plan Competition rules.

People’s Choice Award Information

The People’s Choice Award is determined by popular vote. Votes must be genuine and from real individuals. Any team found using fake votes or algorithms to manipulate the outcome will be disqualified from the entire competition.

The BYU Management Society values moral and ethical leadership, and this competition upholds those principles.
