Overcoming Personal Hardship
Neha, who grew up in poverty and lost her father at the age of 13, was forced to leave school to support her family. “There are four of us: my mother, two sisters, brother, and me. We had no other source of income, so I had to start earning money.” With limited education, Neha began working as a cleaner at a beauty salon, where she observed and learned basic beauty treatments such as threading, facials, hair styling, and waxing. Over the years, Neha freelanced in her neighborhood, gradually building a loyal clientele.
Building a Business Despite Financial Challenges
After saving enough to rent a small space, Neha opened her salon and, eventually, another for her sister to manage. But running the salon wasn’t without its challenges. “Money was my biggest challenge,” Neha shared. Despite having a solid client base, managing the salon’s overhead costs and maintaining profits proved difficult.
Yet, Neha’s resilience and dedication to her craft kept her going. “Success didn’t come quickly. It took time and hard work. But customer loyalty is key to a successful salon business.”
Personal Touch in Client Relationships
Neha’s personal touch sets her apart in the beauty industry. She builds meaningful relationships with her clients, maintaining a notebook with details like their birthdays and family members’ names to personalize her interactions. Her clients appreciate her skill, patience, and dedication, making her salon a trusted name in the community.
Empowering and Training Others
In addition to her business, Neha is committed to empowering others. Inspired by the salon owner who once mentored her, she now employs and trains young girls, many of whom have little education or opportunity for career growth. “The girls I trained didn’t have other chances for career growth.
At my salon, they work in a safe and comfortable place, earning good money while continuing their education.” Neha’s commitment to her employees’ personal and professional development has created a strong team with low turnover, further strengthening her business.
Future Aspirations and Advice to Entrepreneurs
Neha aspires to open a beauty academy to teach and uplift more young girls. She believes the beauty industry provides a safe and rewarding career path, particularly for those who have had to leave school. Her funding from the business plan competition allows her to start to fulfill this dream.
Her advice to budding entrepreneurs is to focus on their craft and maintain strong business principles. “New business owners should do their homework, make a detailed plan, and keep good records. Most importantly, they should work hard and be honest with themselves and their customers.”
Neha Parcha’s story is one of determination, perseverance, and the power of giving back. Her recognition at the BYU Management Society Asia Conference is a testament to her impact in her community and beyond.
