Academic Backgrounds and Career Paths
Rina earned her Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Communication and Media Studies and Cultural Anthropology at BYU-Hawaii, while Michael took a different route. After leaving BYU-Hawaii in December 2022, the couple moved to Utah for Rina’s academic training. Michael completed his remaining courses online at BYU-Idaho, where he earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, focusing on Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
Michael’s entrepreneurial spirit was ignited during his time at BYU-Hawaii, mainly as he realized his passion for finance. “I always wanted to have my own business but wasn’t sure of the industry. Thanks to the guidance of my professors, I found my love for finance, which inspired my path into asset management,” he shared.
Rina’s journey began with student leadership at BYU-Hawaii, followed by a role in event management. Now an executive administrator for a recruitment company, she attributes her success to the skills she developed in school. “My experience helped me hone crucial skills like leadership, time management, and problem-solving. Today, I’m able to balance my responsibilities as a mother, wife, and professional.”
Michael’s Financial Acumen and Investment Strategy
Michael is the Founder and Fund Manager of Busania Asset Management. Warren Buffett’s investment philosophy heavily influences his approach to managing investor portfolios. “I’ve adopted a conservative approach, guided by Buffett’s rule: ‘Never lose money.’ It’s about understanding your investments and having conviction in your decisions,” he explained.
Navigating the complexities of the Philippine equity market, Michael remains cautious. “Liquidity is limited compared to other markets, so I maintain a conservative stance, focusing on a few key investments rather than spreading myself too thin.”
Rina’s Approach to Leadership and Community Engagement
Rina’s experiences as an ESL teacher and missionary have shaped her leadership and community involvement approach. “Patience and empathy are key. Whether dealing with cultural or language barriers, it’s important to show genuine care for others,” she emphasized. Her leadership style reflects these values as she builds strong connections with the people she serves.
Balancing Multiple Interests
Michael’s dedication to personal growth extends beyond finance. In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, he is passionate about music and graphic editing. Though he admits that managing a startup demands most of his time, he finds fulfillment in serving as a pianist at his local church. “Music helps me stay grounded, and I’m grateful I can share my talent with others.”
Rina’s Versatility in Professional Roles
Rina has demonstrated remarkable versatility with a diverse career spanning event management, safety management, and administration. Her interdisciplinary studies at BYU-Hawaii, combining communication and anthropology, have equipped her with a unique skill set that she applies to her various roles. “I’m proud that my career has allowed me to explore different fields. My education has given me a broad perspective on communication dynamics, human behavior, and cultural diversity,” she noted.
Vision for the Future
As the Principal Owner of Busania De Negocios, Michael envisions contributing to the economic development of his home province, Quirino. “I want to provide employment and build a successful business that represents where I come from. Many people don’t know Quirino exists, but I’m proud to say that’s where I’m from.”
Rina, on the other hand, offers advice to recent graduates. “Be flexible and open to learning. Your first job might not be what you expected, but it’s important to adapt and grow. Network and seek mentorship, but also remember to maintain a healthy work-life balance.”
Shared Aspirations and Commitment to Service
As a couple, Michael and Rina deeply commit to supporting each other’s dreams. “We pray for each other’s success and celebrate our wins together,” Rina said. Reflecting on their shared experiences at BYU-Hawaii, they aim to live by the university’s motto, “Enter to learn; go forth to serve.”
“Our goal is to give back to our community and help build the Kingdom of God here on earth,” they concluded.
Michael and Rina Busania’s journey exemplifies the values of service, leadership, and continuous growth instilled at BYU-Hawaii. Their story inspires current students and recent graduates as they navigate their own paths in life.
