BYU MS Hong Kong – Six Paradoxes of Leadership and The Mindset Required to Navigate Them, By Doug Holyoak

Characteristics of a Leader
Six Paradoxes of Leadership by Doug Holyoak

BYU MS Hong Kong held an online virtual meeting on February 19th with the guest speaker, Doug Holyoak, the director of Human Capital Asia Pacific, and PriceWaterhouse Coopers.

Doug has been a frequent speaker and supporter of BYU MS activities in Hong Kong. I had the privilege to listen to Doug speak during this excellent virtual webinar.

He spoke about what it means to be a leader today in our ever-changing world; he said of how COVID has changed the leaders’ paradox and then spoke of what leaders need to do to survive during these times of change.

Doug mentioned the Six Paradoxes of Leadership As:

  • Globally Minded
  • High-integrity Politican
  • Humble Hero
  • Strategic Executor
  • Tech-saavy Humanist
  • Traditional Innovator

He asked us some important questions that leaders need to ask themselves. A few of the questions he asked include:

  • How do you execute effectively while also be being highly strategic? (Strategic Executor)
  • How do you become increasingly tech savvy and remember that organizations are run by people, and for people? (Tech-savvy Humanist)
  • How do you have the confience to act in an uncertain world and the humility to recognize when you are wrong? (Humble Hero)
  • How do you use the past to help your future success while also creating a culture that allows innovation, failure, learning and growth? (Traditional innovator)

I know as a leader, many of the things he said forced me to rethink how we think of leadership and why these new paradoxes of leadership are so important.
